I didn’t become aware of HIV until it affected me directly. When my husband started getting very sick that’s when they told him he was positive. We only heard about that happening like in big cities. That’s never going to happen in our town. My husband was not undetectable immediately so that’s when we decided to take the PrEP route. PrEP is medication that a person is able to take when they’re not positive and that can continue to stay in that status. We were just ready to have that freedom that we used to have to be together and not have to worry. I think that a lot of people don’t even know that PrEP exists. What it’s for and how it works. We should be able to talk about it without feeling that it’s shameful. PrEP allows women to feel empowered over their own bodies, taking control of their health.
