PrEP is pre-exposure prophylaxis and exactly what it says. “Pre” or before a sexual exposure like condomless sex. So PrEP is basically a program that involves either some kind of medications, whether it be a pill or injections that someone who is HIV negative can take in order to prevent getting HIV.
The joy of it is that it gives empowerment to people, particularly younger people who may not have been engaged with their providers like that before, and then now they’re coming in on a regular basis and it kind of opens the door for, “Hey, let me go ahead and get this checked out. Let me go ahead and see what my blood pressure’s looking out. Let me do this STI screening and see what’s happening.”
So, PrEP has become a gateway to other primary care services.
